Una brutta figura o figuraccia è un’azione che appare inadatta o fuori luogo, un comportamento che genera giudizi negativi a livello sociale e che ha spesso una dimensione ridicola, scomoda e imbarazzante.

Letteralmente, questa espressione potrebbe essere tradotta in inglese come: “to do an ugly figure” . Un insieme di parole che, nella lingua inglese, non possiede alcuna forza espressiva. Una traduzione più corretta dal punto di vista semantico si trova nelle espressioni: to make a poor showing, to make a fool of oneself, oppure to make a bad impression.

Esempio 1:

Avresti dovuto vedere la faccia divertita del mio amico Giovanni, che aprendo il mio regalo di compleanno, ha detto: "ma questo è lo stesso libro che mi hai regalato a Natale!" Io ero terribilmente imbarazzata. “Ho fatto un figuraccia”, pensavo, ma lui ha sdrammatizzato dicendo: almeno possiamo dire che sei una persona coerente!
You should have seen the amused expression on the face of my friend Giovanni, who, upon unwrapping my birthday present, said, "but this is the same book you gave me for Christmas!" I was terribly embarrassed. "I made a fool of myself," I thought, but he played it down and said, at least we can say that you're a consistent person!

Era da giorni che mi ripetevo di stare attento a non fare una brutta figura con mia moglie… che non potevo dimenticare il nostro anniversario di matrimonio. E indovina un po’? Anche quest’anno sono riuscito a dimenticarlo.
For days I had been telling myself to be careful not to make a poor showing with my wife… that I couldn’t forget our wedding anniversary. And guess what? Even this year I managed to forget it.

Esempio 3:

Penso di aver fatto la più grande brutta figura della mia vita ieri quando, per sbaglio, sono entrata nel bagno degli uomini.
I think I made the biggest fool of myself ever yesterday when, by mistake, I walked into the men’s room.
